Mormon Church Makes Bid To Acquire Facebook

bradybd:

Mormonbook

According to Zach Klein and his valley sources, the Mormon Church’s Family History Department has made a bid to acquire Facebook:

I heard from an employee close to the deal that the Mormon church’s genealogy business made an unsolicited bid to acquire Facebook.

The Mormon Church maintains the largest genealogical database in the United States and apparently has the cash reserves necessary to make an offer of the magnitude necessary to acquire Facebook.

According to a 1997 Time Magazine Report, the Church of Latter Day Saints’ assets exceeded $30 Billion in 1996, and three years later was reported to be making over $5 Billion in revenue each year.

The Church is no stranger to the technology world, and in the 1980’s even created the first standard for exchange of genealogical information, Genealogy Data COMmunications, or GEDCOM for short.

The shear depth and breadth of the Church’s genealogical information is staggering - the specter of pairing it with one of the most detailed, accurate, and widespread social maps in existence (Facebook) is truly terrifying.

How much did they offer? Well, according the the latest executive stock sale rumors, Facebook may actually be valued at around $5-8 Billion – so we can only assume that the Church made an offer somewhere north of the $5 Billion mark.

My question is – will they roll their own private label version? Mormonbook anyone?

UPDATE (2:04 am): My inquiry a couple of hours ago to an old college friend who works for one of the interested parties has indicated that there is more at play here than meets the eye, and definitely more than just a kernel of truth to this rumor.

All your family are belong to them.

It actually makes a lot of sense, given the Mormon focus on family and geneology. Imagine having that access to thousands of people’s families, social connections, and in effect their human networks.

Imagine having that giant database all in one place instead of having to compile all of that information yourself. It’s a goldmine.

I’m not saying it would be good or bad, just extremely interesting.

“In this case, ANN strongly recommends and encourages the criminal prosecution of this so-called inspector and his immediate supervisors… it is a matter of time before one of these morons does something stupid and gets someone killed… and with the way these incidents are occurring, we believe it is a virtual certainty that a TSA “Inpector” will hurt or kill someone in such a manner. No kidding.”

Seem to know just right where they belong
Smears of face reflecting in the chrome
Hiding in the crowd I’m all alone
No one’s heard a single word I’ve said
They don’t sound as good outside my head
Looks as though the past is here to stay
I’ve become a million miles a-”

· Invest time learning about the company and interview team: At least do the basics. An hour of research will make you more knowledgeable than 90% of your competition. Do an internet search (please use Google) to learn in advance about the interview team. You should be able to figure out what the business challenges are related to the job you interviewing for, just by doing a little work. You’d be surprised how many people apply to Google and don’t really understand our business model or even many of our products. It has been my experience that most candidates don’t do this.

· Really understand the required qualifications: Take the time to really understand the qualifications for the job and map them to your qualifications. If there’s not a clear fit, I would recommend really reconsidering whether you should apply for that particular job and instead spend more time finding one that is more suitable.

· Always send thank-you notes. In fact, I recommend sending two thank-you notes, one via email directly after the interview, that also includes a relevant additional question or two related to the job (no fluff), and another hand-written thank-you note as a marketing impression to the interview team. On the other side of the equation, as the talent marketplace continues to heat up and relative scarcity continues to play out, companies that are able to scale while preserving an authentic connection with the talent marketplace will win. This requires foresight and commitment

Temptation

I am tempted to start a new Tumblr or blog or something dedicated to silly user stories, though what would I write about here? ;-)

For example, this morning I received this email:

“I am still having issues with the computer. Please put a work order in. Thanks.”

Work Order 64753: “Monday has widened the growing rift between woman and computer. The issues, starting last week have only worsened with the passing of a new week. Lady and computer have grown apart to the point where any reconciliation would be impossible. This day marks the end of an error, one that will surely be missed by all involved.”

New Model

This morning I’m emailed a link to a new module of LANDesk we are to start using. So I install it, it doesn’t work, asking for a server address.

I print out the user’s guide. All 50 pages of it. With lots of pretty pictures and graphs. So I have it and am reading through it and can’t for the life of my determine what this new functionality is supposed to bring us?

Why do I have this?

How am I to use it?

What benefits does it have over our existing setup?

The biggest problem is LANDesk is still asking for a “management console credentials” to half the PCs I try to remotely access and not a single person on the Desktop team who manages it can give me a straight answer.

So… why do I need this new tool?

I handle 100+ help calls everyday. I am careful about what else I allow into my workflow. If it doesn’t prove to have a clear benefit then I don’t want it.

I won’t tolerate a tool that does nothing but slow me down because someone suit somewhere decided we should use it.

Remind me again why the help desk gets no say in the tools we use?

you used to be someone I didn’t mind
I even called you a friend
you used to be someone I’d hang out with and was cool
and now it’s all going to end

you wanted more and more
you wanted to keep taking it all
I gave and I gave to you
but now I’m all out
and you’re greed continues

please give me this
please give me that

please let me stay
please give me all that

you have
it’s mine
i’ll never work a day in my life
i just want you to give me all i want
because it would be easier for me

no longer
i’ve got no more to give

you’re a leech you’re a leech
you’re taking it all
you’re gonna keep taking it until you got everything
I’m tired of giving and giving to you
I’m tired of giving all i’ve worked for away

you take advantage of me
you take advantage of my friends
and then we get the tiniest little bit angry
and you can’t figure out why we’re no longer friends
why we’re no longer friends

open your eyes
look all around you
stop living solely for yourself
maybe if just for a second
you took into account
what you’re doing to us

now you can’t look out side your own head
all you do serves you
all you do serves you

“All you do serves you”

Lyrics I wrote tonight and recorded a rough mix of to some music a friend wrote. It’s been a great weekend full of fun and gaming but there are somethings that are about to change in my living situation. I am tired of putting up with people who invite themselves to my apartment every weekend.
