I’m sure you split stories like this into two pages for a good reason: to save my bandwidth. After all, the remaining 3,126 characters of the story’s body (1,530 bytes as transferred with gzip compression) would have increased the page’s total size by 0.32%.

No, I’m just yanking your chain. I know you’re double-charging your advertisers for the same story by artificially inflating your pageview count. It’s just like the old auto-frame-refresh trick, but this one’s better because most of the ad networks haven’t banned it yet. That’s their problem, right? Why should you leave money on the table? You’re a business.

But it doesn’t really work as well as you had hoped because only a tiny percentage of viewers will actually read page two. You know that, but you don’t care, because you won’t give up a chance to make a few extra cents. Who cares if it annoys the crap out of that tiny slice of your audience? Who are they, anyway? The people who actually read your content thoroughly instead of skimming the headline and moving on? That can’t possibly be your most important audience segment — they’re just the most involved and attentive. Repeat customers. You already have their “eyeballs” that you can sell to your real customers. And these dupes get their eyeballs double-counted. What a steal!

Keep up the great work, publishers.

AMEN! Seriously, when I see this multiple page crap the first thing I look for is the “print” button so I can get it all on one page, the next is the “Read Later” instapaper link.

It gets even better when one of the pages doesn’t load properly or a giant flash ad takes over the screen because you’ve rolled over something you didn’t mean to.

90% of the time when I encounter an article where I have to go to the next page, and the ENTIRE PAGE CHANGES, I close the tab and move on. There’s tons more interesting content and if yours is a pain to get to, I’ll skip it. It’s most likely nothing I can’t find on one of 15 other nearly identical sites.

Though the most infuriating is when I’ve loaded it into Instapaper my feed reader on the iPod Touch for my commuter home where I read the longer articles I’ve encountered throughout the day, and I get through page one…. and that’s all I have.

I’ve stopped reading some blogs because it ticks me off. There’s no reason to slice up relatively small articles to begin with into 3 or 6 pages. Just give me the whole thing!

Yes. Yes it is laughable. And yes, you would expect to read it in the Onion. Somehow Nine Inch Nails has the clear moral high ground. The U.S. government’s moral authority somehow slipped briefly below Trent Reznor’s. But Liz Cheney seems to be reacting the wrong way. Rather than asking how we got to this spot, she seems to be insisting that we’re in a spot that is so absurd it can’t possibly exist.

If it doesn’t exist in at least two places it doesn’t exist.*

*And if it’s really, really, really critical, back it up in two places and a third off-site.

I cannot stress this enough, BACK UP YOUR FILES!

Because when, not if, your hard drive crashes.

Your child spills juice on your laptop.

You knock your coffee onto the desk and your laptop.

You drop your laptop.

Or the eventuality of a hard drive having moving parts and eventually it will die occurs.

Your. Files. Are. Gone!

Recovery is very expensive! Often costing hundreds if not thousands of dollars with zero guarantee of recovery of anything!

So please, just backup.

If you’re on a Mac, use Time Machine or the superb SuperDuper!

If you’re on Windows, use Second Copy (free trial) or Sync Back (Free, look for it on the page).

If you’re on Linux you should know enough to backup already.

Today is Droid Day.

I’m really on the fence about getting one. I’d love to dump my work Blackberry for a Verizon smartphone. I’m hesitant to leave Verizon because we’re all on a family plan. I’ve got a New Every Two discount coming up in December.

Right now, Droid looks like the frontrunner though the subpar keyboards (yes, both of them) and iffy Exchange server support have me cautiously reconsidering.

Now that it’s out, I plan to go fondle it and see how it fits in my giant hands.

Lost in the disappointment that happened in Maine is what happened in Washington state. In May of this year, our state legislature passed a bill that gave gay couples ALL of the rights of heterosexual married couples. Some out of state fuckwits sought to overturn the new state law and gathered enough signatures to put a measure on the ballot, repealing the law.

Washington voters upheld our legislators’ “everything but calling it marriage” bill. So there is at least one state where, when a goddamn civil rights measure was put to a popular vote, the voters did the right thing.

My faith in humanity has partially been restored. Thank you Washington!
